hey so, just so there's no ambiguity about what just happened-- this was about Prosecraft, a website that would help you compare your writing to your favorite author by analyzing the "vividness" of the words used, passive voice vs active voice and the number of adverbs used in a given section.
unfortunately, the service is dogshit for various reasons but that's not the issue here.
the issue is that the website had trained an AI on 25,000 books, one of which included mine. and i definitely did not give anyone permission to use my work to train an AI. it's literally stated in my contract.
and if i didn't give permission--i can imagine quite a number of authors didn't give permission either. (oops, i don't have to imagine--because hundreds of authors came forward and said they didn't give permission either!)
so i emailed my agent about this. my agent directed me to my publisher which has a legal department that looks into piracy on this scale. all of those authors did the same, emailing their legal team, getting The Authors Guild involved.
EVERY AUTHOR pretty much roasting this guy named Benji Smith on Twitter for claiming to "support authors" yet clearly using pirated work to train an AI.
of course, he decided to take the website down. authors are now talking about getting AI protection clauses in their contracts going forward. i already have one with my agent, but I imagine I will have to get it instated into every publishing contract moving forward.

list of problems the removal of icons causes:
- i cant see my friends
- ruins the sense of community
- can't tell at a glance who's online right now and what they're interested in
- literally cannot tell without scrolling back up who put a post on my dash if it has a single addition attached to it. or like. 2 paragraphs in the op.
- i cant click my own icon at the top of the dash to quickly view my own blog
- can't tell who someone used to be if they change their username
- squashes the margins between the menu and posts, making the whole dash feel more cramped
- ruins the quick visual cue of how long each post is and where it ends when you're trying to scroll past ones youve seen before
- people put a lot of creativity and individuality into icons, and now i never see them
- makes people who primarily reblog instead of make their own posts all but completely disappear

- ive never in my life seen a website or app that has profile pics forcibly HIDE them, so i guess you did it you made the dash unique again in the worst way
here's some more feedback: maybe when you run an a/b test you should, idk, actually have a feedback form people can fill out about it somewhere
Can someone explain why anyone would even WANT to take icons away? What the motive even is here?
Wild speculation here, but making it harder to tell at a glance who put what on your dash would sure make it easier to sneakily slip promoed posts or advertising in there without people immediately being able to tell that they're advertising.

i think all quiet on the western front and the lord of the rings are in direct conversation with each other, as in theyre the retelling of the same war with one saying here’s what happened, we all died, and it did not matter at all and another going hush little boy, of course we won, of course your friends came back
someone should remake lord of the rings as a grandfather telling a fantasy story to his grand child with flashbacks to world war one showing the dead boys and men the characters were based on. grandpa why didn’t they just fly. because they didn’t. they didn’t.

I will never get over how Tolkien & Lewis took the horrors of war and spun them into fantasy.
Shivering in the trenches dreaming of cozy hobbit holes, shaking as bombs pockmark a forest and imagining each shallow mud-filled crater contains a new world—that maybe there are still as many beautiful things in the universe as there are bombs—that maybe the world is bigger than this moment and this ugliness and one day this will be a peaceful forest again full of small ponds.

realizing now that I could write an entire post about how Derek's role in this show really seems to be a symbol for all of Guillermo's bad choices that hurt others lmao
like really, has he ever had an appearance that didn't involve
a. Guillermo realizing that his work as familiar hurts people (see: the mosquito hunters)
b. Guillermo realizing that his abandonment of people he doesn't care about causes damage (Derek in the chamber of judgement)
c. Guillermo realizing that he has the ability to make people feel lonely and abandoned (Derek in the wedding episode)
d. Guillermo realizing that not everyone in the vampiric world has no morality and hurts people, that's just a Him Thing (again, Derek in the wedding episode)
or
e. Guillermo realizing that his half-thought-through actions can cause major problems for literally everyone, including himself (Derek's whole role in this turning debacle)
like... no wonder Guillermo seems to avoid the guy whenever he can; he really seems to bring up a lot of topics Guillermo doesn't want to think about.
